Techno Subgenres You Need to Know (2024)

"Techno" has stopped being a useful description on its own. The distance between a hypnotic 128 BPM record and a 150 BPM hard techno weapon is wide enough that fans of one frequently cannot sit through the other.

Here are the divisions worth knowing, and what actually separates them.

Detroit techno

The original. Funk underneath the machines, melody treated as essential rather than decorative.

Minimal

Reduction as a design principle. Very little happens, and the very little that does happen carries enormous weight.

Hypnotic / dub techno

Long, patient, texture-led. Built for rooms where sets run six hours and nobody is checking the time.

Industrial techno

Distortion, metallic percussion, and a deliberately hostile surface. The harder end of the European warehouse tradition.

Hard techno

Fast, loud, and currently dominant at festival scale. Kicks doing the melodic work, tempos north of 145.

Melodic techno

The most accessible branch and the one most responsible for the genre's recent growth. Big emotional payoffs, arranged for very large rooms.

None of these are walls. Most working DJs move across three or four of them inside a single set — knowing the vocabulary just makes it easier to describe what you liked.
